HTC is confirming that its earning honeymoon is over on the last quarter, it will be reporting a 2.49% sales reduction with operating income of $430 million or a 22% decline compared with last year sales. HTC cites strong competition and economy as the main factor for its decline, but it looks like rivals are putting out better and affordable smartphones and HTC has been left in the cold with good, but not good enough handsets.

In the other side of the coin, Samsung is reporting its operating profit of $4.6 billion on smartphones and hard drive sales, Samsung makes everything, from hd, television, chips and many more stuff, but as it’s not reporting its mobile phone sales We can imply from the sale of its hard drive business to Seagate for $1.38 billion that the mobile business is only $3.22 billion.

Samsung has main reason for HTC decline, it has been launching new Android smartphones every week on every possible market available, making impossible for HTC and others to make a comeback. Both companies are selling Windows Phone 7 based smartphones, it’s still impossible to know if there’s any real benefit added to their bottom line, Samsung doesn’t disclose its smartphone sale.

Apple will be reporting its quarter sales on January 24th. We are counting the days.

HTC, one of the most important Android manufacturers is watching its mobile business dries, rivals like Samsung and Apple are putting too much pressure on HTC, which has seen a 20% drop on sales and a 30% sequentially compared to the same month of last year.

The real problem with HTC is that it has too many smartphone brands with little differentiation among them and must be creating a lot of confusion on consumers looking for a hardcore Android or Windows Phone 7 smartphone but find that there’s a whole new mobile phone available each week and buying one today don’t make sense when you can have a shiny new one in a few days. This strategy is called “choice”, yep, people loves choices, but too much choice hasn’t helped HTC. It’s time to rethink its mobile strategy, because its legal one against Apple has failed miserably and next week announcement from the ITC about a possible ban on the US requested by Apple could hurt a lot more, plus an imminent enforcement in Germany will put HTC on the brink.

The buying of Beats Audio and S3 Graphics are a distraction, HTC should focus in streamline its smartphone lineup and bring the most amazing user experience instead of providing mobile phones with top of the line specifications and hardware features that most of the people are not interested in.
