Apple’s home media dilemma

appletv-media-dilemma

Yesterday I received a shiny new iMac 27″ and I only have one word to define this gorgeous monster: AMAZING, this computer is elegantly designed, a perfect match for my office needs, but an ultra perfect match for my home as a real media center and this is where Apple fails miserably.

The clean and ultra sharp LCD screen of the iMac 27″ is more than perfect to fit a TV tuner, but Apple’s other ventures (itunes, AppleTV) force us to stay away from enjoying live TV and channel surfing features on any Mac, if this iMac doesn’t have this default features, then not other mac can. You can add an USB based media center from two or three vendors, but those offers doesn’t match completely the experience of Mac OS X.

Apple is more profitable selling TV programs and movies on iTunes to fill those iPhone and iPhone around the world than providing TV tuner to the iMac, but a combination of both could be a home-run and will only help Apple takes a bigger marketshare in the Home-Media segment, a segment totally dominated by the video games platform, where Apple can’t compete, unless it provides a perfect integration of DVR+iTunes+TV Games and Apple is too far from it and the gap is only getting bigger with Microsoft and Sony adding more and more features each day.
