USB IF sent strong message to Palm about the iTunes syncing… Palm got what it deserves

Palm has been trying to provide iTunes synchronization for its WebOS based Palm Pre mobile phone by disguising it as an iPod, something that got Apple attention and the rest is a lesson of business 101, that ended up with a clear message from the USB Implementer Forum, the organization that control the USB Standards.
Response from the USB IF to Palm:
“… Your letter also states that:
Palm will shortly issue an update of its WebOS operating system that uses Apple’s Vendor ID number for the sole purpose of restoring the Palm media sync functionality.
I attach for your information the USB-IF’s adopted and published policy regarding Vendor Identification Numbers (VIDs). Under the Policy, Palm may only use the single Vendor ID issued to Palm for Palm’s usage. Usage of any other company’s Vendor ID is specifically precluded. Palm’s expressed intent to use Apple’s VID appears to violate the attached policy.
Please clarify Palm’s intent and respond to this potential violation within seven days.”
Palm is trying to get a free ticket to the iTunes application even if it has to break Apple rights implementing a mechanism that make the Pre looks like a real Apple product and taking advantage of Apple.
But what Palm really got was a strong NOT to this abuse from the USB Group and an enquiry about the reasons Palm is trying to disguise its product as its rival’s products.
