True Lies: Communism in the Palm of our hand

True Lies: Communism in the Palm of our hand palm webOS pre mobile phone communism

Palm is one of the company that has benefited of Apple since its introduction on the market, Palm was borned as a company that supply Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a category created and mastered by Apple‘s Newton, a ultra versatile device that was ahead of its time and couldn’t be sold because the needs for its features didn’t even exist by that time. Enter Palm, founded by Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky, Donna Dubinsky worked for Apple and for Apple subsidiary Claris.

The inventors of the Pilot were Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky, and Ed Colligan, who founded Palm Computing. The original purpose of this company was to create handwriting recognition software for other devices, named Graffiti, but their research convinced them they could create better hardware as well. Before starting development of the Pilot, Hawkins is said to have carried a block of wood, the size of the potential pilot, in his pocket for a week. Palm was widely perceived to have benefited from the notable if ill-fated earlier attempts to create a popular handheld computing platform by Go Corporation and Apple Computer. Now two ex-apple employees, Jonathan Rubinstein and Fred Anderson are in control of Palm future.

So Palm past, present and future has always depended on Apple direct or indirectly, so it’s nothing out of this world and something totally strange that Palm is marketing its new mobile phone with features on an Apple‘s product, but what is really unbelievable is that Palm thinks that is Apple fault when the sync between iTunes and their Palm Pre mobile phone is broken and here is where the poorly orchestrated Communism takes action. Selling a product based on features that depend on a third-party developer is nothing new, but when that developer (Apple) doesn’t know Palm is trying to profit from it or just trying to steal its own marketshare telling the media that Palm Pre is a ultra better mobile phone if compared to the iPhone, you may not expect Apple to provide an easy ticket and guarantee Palm that even if they (Palm) are totally wrong about its own agenda against the iPhone, the sync between the Pre and iTunes will be in place without any problem.

Other companies, like Blackberry has launched its own Mac application to support their mobile phone and uses iTunes to sync iPhotos, the address book, Calendar and many others features, so there is not reason for Palm to believe that the only way to get iTunes sync with the Pre is using a pirate tactic that is being questioned by the USB-IF consortium that manage everything related to the USB technology. Palm is executing this the wrong way and won’t get any respect in the industry and Pre owners.

What I really don’t understand is why would I need iTunes to sync anything in my Windows or Mac PC when Palm can only update their mac application and make it work for the Pre or even use other workaround, but what I think they are looking is to put Apple into position that a legal threat would be necesary and take advantage of the free press it can get while it last. Obviously, Palm must be gaining some time until it comes out with a better mac sync for their Pre.

Could you imagine DirecTV selling you a set top box with features only found in their rival devices? That is impossible, PR people is not this stupid, no way.
