Apple and Google are attacking Microsoft from the upper and lower ends of the computer market. Hence, they are not, yet, in competition. In fact, they need to find ways to cooperate with each other. Apple is not against Open Source; it is merely trying to find ways of selling its hardware to take advantage of open source.

People who need a high amount of computation, or attractive graphics, will never be satisfied with a simple OS like Chrome. Those who want the ease of use and flexibility which Apple provides will never be tempted by Chrome. This means that the upper end of the consumer market which Apple sells into. This is also where most of the money is.

The computer market is changing due to technology. The old desktop paradigm will be ending in a few years as every peripheral gets its own computer-on-a-chip and communicates wirelessly.

Linux, via Chrome, will be taking over the low end computer markets which Apple does not sell into. This means that about a third of Microsoft's market share which now runs cash registers, displays and acts as front ends to mainframes, or servers on the web, will be replaced with inexpensive Linux devises. These devises won't be fast or smart, but they can be used for dedicated and repetitive functions.
