Smule launches “Ocarina” wind instruments app for the iPhone
Today, Smule introduces Ocarina, the first and only app that transforms the iPhone into an expressive musical wind instrument. It’s available now on Apple’s AppStore™ for $0.99 (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=293053479t=8).
See it in action here:
The Ocarina synthesizes sound in real-time, just like a regular instrument, based on actual gestures including wind input, tilt, and finger placement over the four holes overlaid on the multi-touch pad. Unlike other iPhone audio apps, the sound is not pre-compiled but is generated by the notes, gestures and nuance of the individual performer. As a result, it allows an iPhone user to explore and master the musical sounds of an entirely iPhone-native version of an ancient flute-like instrument.
Smule’s audio engine (CHiP) and the Smule Sonic Network make it possible to hear live performances around the world. With the globe view, you can hear performances, and see the origin of that performance.
This is the fourth in a series of innovative applications from Smule (www.smule.com), based on the developer’s innovative mobile audio platform.

OMG. I can't wait to hear from the first loyal Palm user that says his ancient Palm can do this better than the iPhone as they're always ready to boast about. That is a really neat application for musicians. Who the heck would expect to turn their handset into a wind instrument? I wonder if this can be turned into other sorts of wind instruments, like say, a clarinet or a bagpipe. Hoho. I'm totally impressed.
