It would be stupid for Apple to allow Flash on the iPhone.

1. Flash is TEN TIMES SLOWER on OS X AND USES MORE CPU TIME than other operating systems because Adobe has either stupid programmers or deliberately makes Apple a second class citizen.

2. Flash allows 3rd party apps to run on the iPhone without Apple's oversight or permission. Flash IS AN OS, IS A PLATFORM.

3. The only useful thing about flash is Flash Video. But this can be replaced by MP4.

If anything, Adobe should open source Flash and try to make it a standard by letting go of it so that others can make their own Flash player and Flash can be used on more platforms. As it is, Flash is NOT A STANDARD, IS PROPRIETARY, AND CHANGES AT ADOBE's WHIM. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO APPLE. It would make Apple dependent on Adobe, not independent. Adobe already treats Apple as second class.

It is the threat of no Flash that makes Adobe protest the lack of Flash on iPhone. The iPhone is the flash killer.

We're lucky there's no Flash on iPhone. Flash is nothing but a CPU grinder. I get more battery mileage playing back HD MPEG-2 than Facebook Scrabble.

Keeping Flash off the iPhone has more impact on Adobe for now (I already know of many companies moving away from Flash on their web sites so they will work on the iPhone).

Flash is simply a bad idea that promotes non open standards that (for different reasons) Google, Microsoft and Apple want to kill. Apple is the only on in a position to do anything about it right now.

What we all need is for someone to build good tools (Adobe does own this space now) for developing web 2.0+ dynamic interactive content using open standards.

I agree, although I'd love to have Flash, one cannot blame Apple for their tactics.

HTML5 makes Flash redundant. Why should Apple pay Adobe a royalty to get functionality that's to be built into WebKit? Apple is dragging their feet for the reasons you list
