Time for Apple to merge the Mac Mini and AppleTV or kill both
Rumors around the next tell that the Mac Mini reached the end of life, the Mac Mini has been the entry level Mac for years, but it hasn’t captured the heart of new converts, instead of, new mac users prefer the iMac for their mac endeavour.
The main problem with the Mac Mini is that, while it is a genuine mac with all the features of a real mac, it comes with not display, keyboard and mouse and if you decide to buy a Mac Display, the keyboard and Mouse, you could end up paying more than buying an iMac, because a keyboard from the Apple Store is $49 and the Apple Mighty Mouse is $49, the cheaper mac Display is $599.00, if you go mac.
You could end up paying: $599 for the mac mini, $100 for keyboard + mouse and $599 for the cheaper Cinema Display, for a total of $1,298, the same price paid for an iMac. PC users can save the price of the display if they keep their old one, but it’s too high for a headless mac.
The other Apple product not doing fine is the AppleTV, Apple has reiterated for months that the AppleTV is their hobby project, but the main problem with the AppleTV is that it has become and two edge sword, its main idea is to provide the perfect connection between your computer and your TV, Apple hasn’t added any DVR feature like recording live TV, channel surfing, VOD, because it can cannibalize iTunes sales of TV shows and Movies, being this the main reason for the AppleTV poor sales performance.
Not much people outside will buy a product just to see Youtube videos on their tv or any other media in their computers, if I want to see my daughter pictures on tv I use iPhoto or iMovie to create a slideshow and then record it in a DVD, this will be always cheaper than buying an AppleTV.
Now is the time for Apple to merge the Mac Mini and the AppleTV in one product with more features, more HD space and an affordable price, but will need to refocus the whole AppleTV idea, in one side we have a under powered product that we all know can do more and in the other side is the iTunes Store, the most important music service in the world, both products don’t mix, one will have to go and of course it will be the AppleTV.
So, the only thing to do is to add all the chopped features (DVD, DVR, HD Tuner and more) and lets people decide what to do or kill the product completely.
