LaVie Light new NetBook laptop from NEC
NEC has developed a new series of notebook PCs – the “LaVie Light” – designed for users who need a PC for easy access to the Internet and e-mail applications. The first model in the series becomes available for sale today in Japan. “LaVie Light” is the commercial name for the Japanese market. NEC will be accepting orders for LaVie Light via the “NEC Direct” PC shopping site in Japan. From mid-November, the company also plans to gradually roll out sales of equivalent model “NEC VERSA N1100” with overseas specs for Asia-Pacific markets (8 countries and regions) through NEC Computers Asia Pacific.
The LaVie Light, which targets the “NetBook” market, features Intel’s(R) Atom(TM) processor N270, a maximum HDD capacity of 160 GB, and the official Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition Service Pack3. It also offers the support, quality, and user friendliness that customers have come to expect from NEC, which the company has cultivated through its long years of experience in the personal computer market.
Despite its compact size (250 mm (W) x 176.5 mm (H) x 31.3-36.5 mm (H) and light weight (1.17 kg)(*2), it provides outstanding ease of use, which is made possible through the keyboard’s 2 mm keystroke and a key pitch of 17 mm for easy input, and the “Power Off USB recharging function” that allows users to recharge digital music players and other devices through a USB connector, even when the PC’s power is off.
Its robust construction can withstand up to 150 kgf of pressure, making it ideal for portable use.
NEC will offer the same support services for the LaVie Light series as it does for current consumer PCs in Japan, including a dedicated phone line for repairs that accepts calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a week, and one year of free operations assistance following the date of purchase. The extensive support menu also includes “UltraCare International Service”, which provides repair support to 25 countries around the world for customers who have purchased LaVie Light and taken it abroad.

“LaVie Light Menu” makes it possible to start up frequently used software, such as an Internet browser, e-mail, or electronic manuals, with a single click.
Non-glare LCD panel reduces reflections of sunlight and other external light.
“Mobile Optimizer” eliminates the hassle of switching communication environments when using
the PC in different locations.
3. Ensuring peace of mind in all usage environments
Flat top cover withstands pressure up to 150 kgf. A space between the top cover and the LCD panel absorbs pressure, and the large rubber feet on the bottom of the PC distribute the pressure to ensure maximum robustness.
Same support service as existing personal computers. A variety of services ensure maximum peace of mind, including Internet-based remote support via the PC screen; a dedicated phone line for repairs that accepts calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a week; and free operations assistance for one year after the date of purchase.
“UltraCare International Service” provides repair support for customers who have purchased LaVie Light and taken it abroad, with assistance in Japanese, even for users on overseas business trips.
