Whatever happened to the UMPC…..

Whatever happened to the UMPC..... knockout

Do you remember something about Origami? No, no the japanese papel folding techniques, the Microsoft “outofthisworld” device/platform that will change how we interact with our mobile devices…

If your short and long answer is NOT, you are not alone, only a few bunch people has seen an UMPC, a ultra light subnotebook that was aimed a young executives hungry for mobile devices they can carry everywhere, but the Origame didn’t fold well enough and the buzz around the project disappeared faster than a blink.

I remember the time when the buzz was about Origami, wow, that same time Apple was planning a secret event the February 28th, 2006 and Microsoft wants to take away media coverage for this new device, the Origami seems to be the perfect rival, but this rival is having some difficulties reaching the 10th Round.

There was a rush to deliver the ultimate mobile experience and Origami, (Microsoft name for the Project), suffered the cruel reality, everybody was looking for a mobile phone that can do what Origami was trying to, the battery life helped to keep away people, plus higher prices made the devices to expensive for almost everybody.

The Origami (UMPC, Light Subnotebook, call it what you want) as we know it hasn’t found its niche market and they very hurry, because the new fever is now in the inexpensive almost disposable light notebook, everybody is jumping to this market, from the One Laptop Per Children to the Eee PC (that has taken the market by storm), every major pc maker has or is planning a subnotebook.

It is time to reshuffle the Origami strategy, unfold and twist some marketing ideas and redesign those little (some of them cute, others ugly as hell) devices to meet the market expectation, there’s not business in having a ultra powerful device that nobody can afford to buy or nobody wants to use.

Maybe what they need to do is create an inexpensive machine, ready to run every major OS on the market, make tools for people to create applications, give 1 year free wifi everywhere, pour some good windows games on it free, load it with Microsoft Officce or StarOffice, make it almost Open Source and you will see how many hackers and underground developers will take it as their primary portable machine.

Take my advice, it’s always better sell something….

Meanwhile, I still use my Newton, it works.
