Rundown: The best cheap notebook for the rest of us (1-2)

The One Laptop per Child (OLPC)
The mission of this non-profit association (One Laptop Per Child) is to develop a low-cost laptop – the “$100 Laptop” – a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world’s children. Their goal is to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves.
The first notebook model, the OLPC XO, has started to be rolled out to the first third-world countries in November last year. In the US and Canada, the first OLPC laptops could be ordered via XO Giving until December 31, 2007.
This May, te OLPC 2.0 was shown to the public and at the same time Microsoft jumped into the bandwagon supporting the OLPC initiative and providing a Windows Version to the project. While the OLPC is not intended to hardcore users it can do the job, read email, word documents and its primary intention, educate using technology, for a mere $200 there is not out there that can equal the OLPC.
You can get a OLPC for about $200 and the page with lot of information can be reached here: http://laptop.org/

Elonex ONE

The UK’s first sub £100 laptop. Launched at the Education Show 2008, the unit has been designed to offer affordable access to wireless internet, email and word-processing. Aimed primarily at the Education Sector the laptop will be a tool to give children modern computing skills and access to online resources, and to give teachers a range of new methods to teach with.
The vision of the ONE project by Elonex is for every child in the UK to have their own laptop. With computing playing such a huge part of modern day life, it is essential to familiarise children with ICT from an early age and to show them the vast range of tools and resources available to them.
As well as being a subject in its own right, ICT is a common thread that can be used in every subject across the whole curriculum. In the 21st century it is an essential that ICT is taught as a fundamental skill which then can be used to improve a child’s learning, to offer a more engaging and interactive education, and to equip the next generation with the skills they need to excel in the business world.
To get a hands on look at the ONE go to the Education show at the NEC Birmingham. The Elonex ONE is on stand SW-T52. Come and have a look, have a go and talk to our staff who can fill you in one the UK’s first £99 laptop.

EasyNote XS

The EasyNote XS offers a 7in screen of an unspecified resolution (800 x 600 pix) 1GB DDR2 RAM and a 30GB hard drive based around a VIA C7-M processor. As already mentioned a full keyboard is on offer, although full in this case means “not a thumb-board” as opposed to a complete desktop board including numpad, as may be fairly obvious. This is along with a 4-in-1 card reader, VGA camera, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi.
The operating system is Windows XP Home, which considering that the VIA chip is unable to run Vista’s Aero interface is probably the right choice. Battery life is touted as 3 hours with the Wi-Fi on, which treads a middle ground between insufficient and acceptable. Finally the XS weighs in at 950 grams and measures 30mm thick, which is similar to the weight of the Asus U1F and Sony TZ but without the functionality. Or in other words, we expect it to be just another example of why the UMPC platform simply isn’t needed.
Price: Between £199-£200
