OKI Develops high-speed digital recording and three-track simultaneous play back audio system

OKI Develops high speed digital recording and three track simultaneous play back audio system oki audio system chip

Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. today announced it has developed the “ML673520A” system LSI for automotive systems. The chip increases speed of compressing and recording digital audios by ten-fold and includes a function to playback three tunes simultaneously.

“The ML673520A is a system LSI based on OKI’s strong track record and skills in designing high-function LSIs. It provides an excellent solution for automotive systems as the market shifts to digital audio,” said Hiroshi Enomoto, President of Silicon Solutions Company at OKI. “For nearly 30 years OKI has been offering automotive system semiconductors for engine control and car navigation systems, and has been developing LSIs for portable audio players to handle digital audio data for consumer electronics.”

The LSI is suitable for car audio systems and AV-integrated car navigation systems compatible with digital audio. The LSI includes a RISC CPU and an audio DSP as well as various communication functions and is compatible with standards such as USB2.0 host controller, MOST (Media Oriented System Transport), MediaLB (Media Local Bus) and CAN controller.

OKI also plans to offer software for drivers and middleware for configuring audio systems, which will enable users to reduce their system development time to 70%. Sample shipments of ML673520A are planned from the end of August 2008 with volume shipments beginning in December 2008.

Major features

Enables high-speed (x10) digital recording speed (max)
As DSP technology for audio improves, the speed of compressing and recording audio data is increased by ten-fold. Leveraging extensive research, OKI is first in the world to achieve a ten-fold speed for automotive equipment, enabling users to record a CD onto the HDD of the navigation system at twice the speed of conventional LSIs.

Simultaneously play back up to three songs
The system LSI can simultaneously playback up to three digital audio files using improved audio DSP technology. Now the driver and passengers in the front and rear seat can each enjoy different music at the same time.

Digital audio data is compatible with standards including AAC, WMA, and MP3. Because the chip uses hardware to control sampling frequency and convert each type of audio data, it can playback music efficiently without undue loading of the CPU.

Compatible with various storage media
Users can play back music recorded from CDs and other audio data stored on USB memories and SD cards. In addition, users can store audio data on a storage media by easily connecting it via USB2.0 (high-speed) host controller, SD card host controller or NAND flash controller.

MOST MediaLB
The LSI includes a MediaLB interface which is compatible to MOST, the standard that is popular in the European market. The LSI can be used for various audio applications by using the MOST network.

Power Management function
The LSI includes conventional standby-mode as well as functions to operate and stop by function blocks, enabling low power consumption operation.
