Zune is Microsoft failed attempt to stop the ipod from getting the whole Windows mp3 platform and a response to the ill-fated Playforsure initiative that let hung a large group of mp3 player makers, which couldn’t dent the ipod almost monopoly. Microsoft’s Zune has been a joke, selling only 2 millions in 2 years of existence while Apple sells more than 10 millions in 3 months.

Microsoft has been adding small features to the player and its social site, signing exclusive material for the platform and having a tattoo fan with the body full of Zune logos. But in the real world is very difficult to find somebody using Zune as a mp3 player, only those that received it as a Christmas gift tend to continue using.

With Zune, Microsoft has seen impossible to take down the iPod and when Zune specs seem to be better crafted, Apple launches a firmware update that let those features in the dust.

But to make thing worse, Microsoft has been testing its new strategy to make the Zune platform even more profitable: Ads for the mp3 player. It seem that the main focus for Microsoft with the Zune is not to provide a out of this world experience and compete with the iPod, it is to make it worse day by day, because nobody would like to have ads playing in your music collection.

Expect from Microsoft the always popular “free music if you commit to see or listen some ads from our sponsors”, something stupid because that’s what radio stations have been doing for years and if you check the ipod, it doesn’t come with a fm tuner; again, people make music collections, load them into their favorite mp3 player and listen it while wallking, running and so on, if ads were to play an important role, we all were still listening radio stations and the ipod has not reason for its existence.

It is to soon to count the Zune out, but if Microsoft keeps littering the ill-borned device with ads and forget about the end user, Zune future will be even more traumatic and maybe kill it would be the better choice, because in the end would you like to loose the control of what you can listen?

Corporation will mandate us what to listen, watch and talk about because they pay for our devices content.
